Hollywood actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio showed her concern about Delhi air pollution. Leonardo shared an Instagram post of a protest that recently took place in India Gate, New Delhi. Over 1500 citizens gathered in the protest to demand action on the hazardous pollution in Delhi.
There is no doubt why Leonardo shared his concern about Delhi air pollution. In 1998, DiCaprio established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) which had the purpose of raising awareness about environmental issues. He had visited India in 2015, to film a segment for his 2016 documentary film, Before the Flood.
After praising environmental activist Greta Thunberg for her bold voice on climate change, Leonardo turned to the terrible condition of Delhi air pollution. According to the forecasts, the AQI is going to touch higher levels by Thursday.
Leonardo DiCaprio Talked about Delhi Air Pollution
While sharing the Instagram post, Leonardo specified that “According to the World Health Organisation, air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 1.5 million people every year; these statistics make air pollution the fifth-largest killer in India”.
In addition to it, Leonardo mentioned the Indian Prime Ministers and talked about their actions. He specified 4 simple points in which he demonstrated the following actions:
- The Indian Prime Ministers office set up a special panel to address the issue, within a few hours of the protest. The panel is due to report on the issue within 2 weeks.
- The Supreme Court of India asked the Central Government and respective state governments to fix the crop and waste burning issue of Delhi within a week.
- The Center accepted that the Green Fund will be used to combat toxic air pollution.
- The Indian Prime Minister asked the Agriculture Ministry to distribute equipment urgently so that crop burning is no longer necessary.
After sharing the deeds of government, Leonardo ended up his concern saying, “Despite these promises, the air is still unsafe and activists will keep the pressure on until the air pollution reaches safe levels”.
He followed his genuine environmental activist role at this point as he said that activist will pressurize the government till the time Delhi air pollution settles.
Delhi has been fighting with hazardous air pollution. Many citizens got serious health issues by this dreadful pollution. By sharing this serious matter on Instagram, Leonardo showed his real concern for Delhi. I hope things get better as time slips away.
